Stéphane Bouquet — texte critique
Two main things stood out to me: first, the strange war film quality, but a displaced war film, that the movie exudes. The character hunts animals, but something in the direction suggests that he’s hunting something else. Everything feels a bit too vast, almost too grandiose (the night, for example, or the desert) for us to think it’s just about an animal, even though it is an alligator. The length of the sequences also amplifies the scale of his hunt. We think (or at least I thought) the animals must have a soul, or something like a soul, and ultimately maybe this priest is hunting God, and he wants to kill Him to free himself.”
“The other thing, of course, is the eroticization of the world in the film. It’s filmed close to the skin, and edited very much like Godard—not in the sense that the editing is disruptive, but in the sense of what he once said: ‘Editing is a heartbeat.’ There’s truly something of a pulse in the film—as if we’re moving through the breath, through the veins, of the priest-hunter, and it gives the whole thing a successful erotic force.
